New Jersey Governor Chris Christie Gets Lap-Band Surgery

New Jersey Governor Chris Christie Gets Lap-Band Surgery

Many of you are aware of all the news hype last week surrounding New Jersey Governor, Chris Christie. He underwent LapBand surgery last February by Dr Fielding  at NYU. He has told reporters that  he underwent the surgery after years of failed weight loss. With recently turning age 50, and realizing the need for improved health, he made the personal decision to undergo bariatric surgery. This is the same surgery that the New York Jets coach, Rex Ryan, received.

This is an extremely important event because it has addressed two major points with bariatric surgery:

First: Bariatric surgery is a powerful intervention that can make an enormous impact on an individual’s life in terms of physical and mental health. It is a life-changing event that should be available to all qualified individuals.

Secondly: Society still has a long way to go in accepting Bariatric Surgery. Just look at all the media attention Christie has received over his surgery! This facination overshadows the real news of his important job. Undergoing weight loss surgery is a personal decision that should be exempt from any societal judgement. Weight loss surgery is a private decision between the patient, his loved ones, and physician. We have the responsibility to respectfully support interventions that demonstrate improved health.
